Attention Agile Coaches & Scrum Masters:
Lyssa Adkins (who wrote THE “Bible” on Agile Coaching)
just came out of retirement to help you…

Get The 3 Surprising Things That
Separate REAL Agile Coaches
From The Opportunists

(HINT: they’re not certifications)

Everyone calls themselves an “Agile Coach” these days.

If you search LinkedIn for the term, you’ll get over 70,000 profiles.
Add “Scrum Master” to the search – who are simply team-level Agile Coaches – and you’ll be looking at a list of well over 3,000,000 people! THREE MILLION!
That’s horrible news for committed agilists like you and me.

You can no doubt see the scenario: Some organization lists a job on LinkedIn for an Agile Coach position, and hundreds of people instantly flood their inbox with “Agile Coach” resumes.

Good luck getting your resume looked at by a human.

What a disaster.

If that wasn’t enough, the situation is even worse than it seems.

Not all those “coaches” are equal. Some people have years of actual agile experience, and others are command-and-control project managers with no agile experience whatsoever, except for the 2-day Certified Scrum Master course they took last week.

When everyone claims to be an “Agile Coach”, it makes it almost impossible for dedicated people like you to stand out.

It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for a job, or if you already have one and are trying to help lead your team as a coach. You’ll be lost in the noise, even if you have a sincere desire to coach your team and organization.

So the question is:

Why should someone (your current employer, or your prospective one) trust YOU are the real deal, not just someone who calls themselves an “Agile Coach”?

And even more importantly…

Regardless of where you are in your agile journey, which Agile Coaching skills could you improve immediately to help you make a bigger difference in the world?
I’m about to show you exactly how to work with the most respected name in the Agile Coaching space (even though they are not currently taking on new mentees), so you can improve your coaching skills right away.
I’m also going to share how you can quickly get the 3 surprising things that all highly successful Agile Coaches have, without having to go through all the years of “pain and suffering” most of us go through to get them.

The Undisputed “Bible” Of Agile Coaching

There’s a single source of knowledge I point people to when they ask me about Agile Coaching.

It doesn’t matter if they’re a brand new Scrum Master, or a seasoned agile pro looking to improve their coaching skills. I always send them to the exact same place.

Lyssa Adkins’ book Coaching Agile Teams.

If you search Amazon.com for “Agile Coaching”, there’s a single book that’ll stand out in the results.

It’s Lyssa’s book, with 637 reviews, that’s gained it 4.7 out of 5 stars.

No other book even comes close. That’s because it’s the seminal work in the Agile Coaching world.

What Agile Legends Say About Lyssa

That’s right… Lyssa literally wrote the
“Bible” on Agile Coaching

Not only did she write the “Bible” on Agile Coaching, she also co-founded the Agile Coaching Institute (ACI) in 2010. ACI has developed over 10,000 people in the knowledge and skills needed to be genuinely competent agile coaches.

In short: If you want to improve your Agile Coaching skills as quickly as possible, there’s no better way to do it than to work directly with Lyssa Adkins.

The bad news is that she retired from teaching individuals in 2019.

That is, until now…

Talking Lyssa Into Coming Out Of Retirement From Teaching
In April of 2020, Lyssa was the first
person I invited to speak at the Agile
Virtual Summit I was organizing.

My pitch to Lyssa?
“Lyssa… We’re all locked in our houses. Everyone is scared of what the future holds. Every conference we were all looking forward to has been canceled.
Want to join me and speak at a virtual event to bring some happiness and knowledge to our community?”

Agile Virtual Summit

This was at the very beginning of the pandemic, before anyone else was hosting virtual events. Joining me for the event was a giant leap of faith for Lyssa. It could have very easily been a disaster.

Spoiler alert: It wasn’t a disaster.

Over 14,500 people registered for the live 5-day event, making it the biggest agile event in history.

It was a raging success.

We learned a lot during those 5 days, including:

  • How to create genuine connection in the virtual space with a large group
  • What makes virtual content engaging
  • How to deliver the same world-class experience Lyssa, myself, and the other speakers were used to delivering in person in the brave new world the pandemic plunged us into

It turned out that gathering thousands of agilists together during a really intense time created some very magical moments and a ton of energy.

Agile Mastery Inner Circle

After the summit, I wanted to make sure we didn’t lose the energy we’d created as a community together during those 5 days, so I invited people to join the Agile Mastery Inner Circle.

Hundreds of people joined.

In this new community, far away from the noise of Facebook and LinkedIn, we met weekly for Lean Coffee sessions, ran live monthly workshops with guest presenters, and more.

I used it as another opportunity to improve our approach to online community building and content delivery. I got lots and lots more experience and made new discoveries.

2022
Coaching Agile Teams Book Club

That’s when I asked Lyssa if she’d like to be involved with the book club on Coaching Agile Teams I was planning to host for the Agile Mastery Inner Circle.

During our conversations we had a realization…

We realized that ANYONE can host just a “book club”. It doesn’t take any special skill. In fact, Lyssa included a book club guide in her recently published audio book of Coaching Agile Teams.

But if Lyssa herself was going to be involved, why would we run just a “run of the mill” book club?

After all, we’d have direct access to the Author. An author with decades of experience teaching and mentoring people on her content.

The Coaching Agile Teams Guided Study & Practice Group

Lyssa was so excited about what we put together, she agreed to come out of retirement from teaching. Since then we’ve had over 600 people – just like you – go through the program, which is now the ONLY way you can work directly with Lyssa.
What the heck is a “Guided Study & Practice Group”?
Well, it starts with the 3 things all real Agile Coaches have…
3 Surprising Things That All Real Agile Coaches Have

There are 3 things EVERY real agile coach I’ve met has. You can’t get them from a book (even Lyssa’s book, as fantastic as it is). Getting these things is hard. So hard in fact, people spend years trying to get all 3. Bad news: Most folks fail. Don’t worry though… I’ve got a shortcut for you.

“But Adam… I thought Lyssa’s book was ‘the bible of agile coaching’. Why won’t it do the trick on its own?”
Well...

Have you ever read a book and thought “I get it, but I’m not quite sure how to apply that to my current situation?” Or, have you ever felt frustrated that you didn’t have someone with more experience and knowledge than you that you could bounce ideas off of for reassurance?

I certainly have.

When I started my agile journey (well over a decade ago), I felt stuck. I knew for sure that this “agile thing” was going to help my team and organization, but I was overwhelmed by all the options and possibilities. Most importantly, I didn’t want to do anything wrong.

I was petrified I’d lead my team in the wrong direction and do actual damage to them, my organization, and our customers. The responsibility was overwhelming. Thankfully I found…

1. A Mentor

Imagine for a moment what your life would look like if you had a trusted mentor you could ask questions of when you felt stuck or overwhelmed. How would things be different for you?

For me, having a mentor meant having someone more experienced than me to validate my ideas. When I was faced with a challenge at work, he didn’t offer solutions, but did help coach me towards safe experiments I could try. He would also let me know if what I was about to attempt had a high probability of hurting something or someone.

He didn’t do the hard work for me, but he made it safe enough for me to move forward, and helped me if I got stuck. Picture how relieved you’d feel, as I did, to know you are going in the right direction with all those people depending on you. Imagine how free you’d feel knowing that you were doing the right thing for your team. Having that sort of confidence makes everything you do so much easier.

It’s a game-changer.

As you no doubt know, this kind of skill isn’t something you can get from just reading a book. It comes from years of actual experience, which is why mentors are like a cheat code to whatever game you’re playing at work. With a mentor, you instantly up your game by standing on their shoulders.

Mentors are invaluable, and EVERY real agile coach has one.
(Trouble is, they’re hard to find, but more on that later…)

2. Community

Another surprising thing that all real agile coaches have is a community of other dedicated agilists. I, like many, found my community through my mentor. In fact, I would not have become friends with Lyssa without him.
While it’s game-changing to find a mentor, it’s also essential to have a community of other agilists you trust. Why?

A mentor, no matter how amazing, is just one person. Having a community of like-minded agilists introduces you to even more ideas, and perhaps most importantly, gives you a genuine sense of not being in this alone.

After all, being a change agent is hard and lonely work. Having the support of a community is essential. While you may have a group of agilists at work, there’s a lot of value in a community that’s specifically NOT working at the same place as you.

Small in-house communities like the one you may have at work have a lot of biases and power imbalances. These complex dynamics get in the way of your growth. While having such a group at work is important, most people find unique value in their external agile community.

But finding the right community? That usually takes a lot of trial and error. It can take months or years. If you’re currently still searching for community, you no doubt know this… All that wasted time searching for the right community is demotivating and frustrating.

What if you didn’t have to spend years searching for the right community? What if, today, you could instantly join a community that you felt at home in, and skip all the awkward painful searching?

Being introduced to my agile community by my mentor was one of the most remarkable things I’ve gained on my agile journey. I want you to find the same comfort I did way back when I met Lyssa and the other agilists I now count as friends.

Mentor
Community

The third surprising thing all real Agile Coaches have is…

3. Practice

Lots and lots of practice.
During each week of the program, Lyssa will present new content, and invite you to do a few activities before the next week’s session.

These activities are carefully crafted to help you embody the key concepts she presents. Some of the activities are things you’ll practice in our online community together, some are things you’ll practice back at work (even if you don’t currently have a team you’re working with), and some of the practice will be focused specifically on you.

Our approach will help you grow the mindset needed to fully embody Lyssa’s approach to coaching. Sound overwhelming? That’s understandable. It’s a lot.

But don’t worry… Lyssa, myself, and the rest of the community will be there every step of the way to help support you. That’s one of the HUGE benefits of doing this work in community instead of “just reading the book”.

Remember: we’ve already had hundreds of people go through the program. We’ve structured things to help you stretch, grow, and improve without the overwhelm that often happens with this type of deep and meaningful work.

Lastly, you’ll have the opportunity to work with an accountability buddy regularly throughout the program, and attend weekly LIVE breakout sessions with others to help you get even more practice together.

By joining the Coaching Agile Teams Guided Study & Practice Group, you get ALL THREE essential things real Agile Coaches need right away.

Most people spend years attempting to find all 3 of these things.

The lucky ones may find 1 or 2 of them. But only extremely fortunate and well-connected people find all three.

Why spend years searching and searching, when you can get all three instantly today?
By joining the Guided Study & Practice Group you’ll get:

A Mentor

Lyssa is with you every step of the way, and through our regularly scheduled live Q&A sessions with her, you can get the guidance you need.

A community of dedicated agilists

You’ll go through the program with a cohort of agilists that are learning the same thing at the same time as you. You’ll also have access to the Agile Mastery Inner Circle where you can get support from people who’ve already been through the program.

Practice

It doesn’t help to just “read a book”.

You have to practice so that you’re ready to take action back at work.

We help you with that every step of the way.

Welcome & Orientation: Intention Guides Attention

In this Opening Ceremony, you’ll get a flying start to the program and set your intention. Intention guides attention and paves the way for everything that happens.
During this live session, we’ll introduce you to the structure of the program, and what you can expect during our time together.
This is also when you'll receive your login information for your Coaching Agile Teams online community and have the chance to introduce yourself to the others in the program.
Can't make it to the Live event? No worries! We'll send you your community login and you can watch a recording of the Opening Ceremony and participate at a time that works for you.

Session 2

Self-Awareness is The Key Skill

Mastering yourself starts with self-awareness, with a little help from some diagnostics to assess your non-violent communication, emotional intelligence, conflict reaction and position on servant leadership. These self-diagnostics help you see “where you are” with regard to mastering yourself. The chapter also looks at command-and-control-ism straight on, including agile-enabling ideas to counter it and specific practices to recover from it.

Session 3

Practices for Self-Awareness and Self-Mastery

Mastering yourself sounds like a fine idea, as a concept, but how does one do it? This chapter answers that question with specific daily and in-the-moment practices. It also introduces you to the ways that people who have mastered themselves listen, speak, and offer their full presence.

Session 4

Coaching and Mentoring: Two Ingredients of Agile Coaching

The dual flavor of agile coaching as both coaching and mentoring is addressed in this section. Contextualized for agile teams, you will understand how agile coaches are not professional coaches, but utilize powerful skills from this discipline to improve individual and whole-team performance. How and when to coach individuals versus the whole team is addressed, along with the ultra-important topic of setting your coaching tone to be loving, compassionate and uncompromising.

Session 5

Coaching People One-on-One

The how of coaching people one-on-one is addressed in detail, including the arc of the coaching conversation, how to get it started and what to do when you have reached your limits. Also included are four must-have pieces to lay the groundwork so that a coaching conversation can happen.

Session 6

Coaching Product Owners

Agile puts product owners in the driver’s seat but doesn’t teach them how to drive! In this chapter, you’ll encounter the topics for teaching and coaching that product owners need before they can be safe in the driver’s seat. Coaching product owners on using agile to run their business and on being a good product owner for the team, to really get good at the role, is our focus.

Session 7

Coaching Managers and Other Agile Coaches

Pro tips and processes for coaching other agile coaches are found in this section, along with specific content for teaching and advising when coaching agile managers. The people occupying these pivotal roles, coach and manager, have a lot of adjusting to do when agile comes into the environment. This section aids you in helping them adjust and even thrive.

Session 8

How to Facilitate the Stand-up and Sprint Planning

Practical tools for facilitating the stand-up and sprint planning are offered with a small slice of product backlog refinement on the side. Special attention is paid to how and when to “fix” the stand-up and how to wield light-touch facilitation during sprint planning.

Session 9

How to Facilitate Sprint Review and Retrospective

Starting with a focus on “why do we do these meetings anyway?” this section offers specific methods for facilitating the sprint review and retrospective meetings. How to observe during sprint review is covered in depth, as is how to facilitate before, during and after the retrospective.

Session 10

How to Facilitate Team Conversations

Facilitating team conversations to increase the quality of the conversation and their capacity as conversation partners takes center stage in this section. Details are provided for offering powerful observations, powerful questions and powerful challenges to help them improve their conversations. The quandary of when to sit with them, and when to sit back is also covered.

Session 11

Let's Close Consciously
Wrap up the entire program with your final accountability check, integration of concepts and your learning, and a conscious celebratory close.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much time do I need to dedicate to the program each week? (What if I’m busy?)
A: Most people, on average, spend about 2.5 hours per week on the program.

But don’t worry… If you’re busy and can’t dedicate that much time to the content and community on a given week, it’s not a problem at all. You can always jump back in at a time that works best for you. We even build in an extra week in the 12-week schedule to allow for your own “week off” when you need a break.

Plus, you have forever access to the content of the program, so you can come back to it in a month (or a year) without a problem.
Q: I don’t have a coaching certification, is that a problem?
A: No. What we are doing with the Coaching Agile Teams Guided Study and Practice Group is providing a deep dive into the seminal work on agile coaching, with the author who can convey the depth and the practicality of the content and her perspective from training thousands.

If you are just starting your road to agile and coaching, this will be useful. If you have already achieved the ICAgile Expert or are at the top of your game in some other way, this will be useful to you.
Q: I haven’t read Lyssa’s book Coaching Agile Teams. Do I need to read it before joining the program?
A: No! We'll be reading a little bit of the book each week as part of the program. If you've read the book before, great! If not, no problem! You'll get the same value out of the program regardless.
Q: Do I need to already be an Agile Coach to participate?
A: No. What we are doing with the Coaching Agile Teams Guided Study and Practice Group is providing a deep dive into the seminal work on agile coaching, with the author who can convey the depth and the practicality of the content and her perspective from training thousands.

A: Yes, you will need a copy of the book or audiobook to do the required reading/listening each week.

The book is not included in the program, but members get a 40% discount on the physical book and digital eBook. The book can be purchased at most bookstores, borrowed from most libraries (for US residents), and possibly selected as a free title as part of an Audible.com trial membership.
Q: Can I use this to renew my Scrum Alliance certification? (or my PMI certification like the PMP?)
A: Yes!

Each hour you spend interacting with Coaching Agile Teams Guided Study & Practice Group content qualifies for 1 Scrum Alliance Scrum Education Unit (SEU) and 1 Project Management Institute Professional Development Unit (PDU). You’ll earn 10 SEUs/PDUs by watching the recorded content, PLUS additional units for every hour spent reading the book, doing fieldwork, or interacting with accountability partners.

If you have both Scrum Alliance and PMI certifications you can even apply the SAME hours towards both SEUs and PDUs.
Q: Is there a money-back guarantee?
A: You can get a full refund at any time, for any reason, during the first 14 days of the program. Simply send us an email requesting a refund, and we’ll credit your original form of payment. No questions asked. You can even keep your access to Lyssa’s Agile Virtual Summit sessions as our gift to you for trying out the program.

NOTE: Over 600 people have gone through the program, and we have a less than 1% refund request rate 😇
Q: Do I have to attend the live sessions?
A: You do not need to attend the live sessions to get value out of the course.
In fact, last time we ran the CAT-1 program, several people did the course by watching the videos and then participating in the online community when they had time during the day.
While some folks really enjoyed the live sessions, others found that doing the work during the week on their own schedule fit their needs better.
Q: Will Lyssa be at each of the weekly sessions?
A: Lyssa Adkins leads every recorded session of the program. While Lyssa cannot attend every live session with your cohort, she’ll participate in virtual Q&A with your group via recorded video.
Q: Where can I get a copy of the Coaching Agile Teams book?
A: The book can be purchased at most book stores, borrowed from most libraries (for US residents), and possibly selected as a free title as part of an Audible.com trial membership. Members get a 40% discount on the physical book and digital eBook.
Q: I'm not in the US. Will the time difference be an issue for me?
A: No need to worry. You're not alone in this at all -- we've all got plates that are a bit too full.
Join us for as much of the program as you feel serves you. Come back to the content anytime in the future to get even more value out of it. Life is long, and the content isn't going anywhere. Take your time :)
Plus...
If the last CAT session is any indication, you're likely to find someone else in your time zone to team up with as an accountability partner.
Q: How long do I get access to the videos and content from the sessions?
A: You get forever access to the content, which means you're free to re-watch the sessions whenever you like. 6 months from now, a year from now, whenever.
